The most common date rape drugs are Rohypnol, GHB and Ketamine in addition to alcohol and marijuana.  These drugs are unfortunately used to incapacitate individuals for the purpose of sexual assault. It’s important for people to be aware of the signs and symptoms of these drugs and to take measures to protect themselves from potential harm. These drugs are only detectable in the body within hours to a few days, causing the detection period to lapse before the victim is tested. In these cases, a hair or nail test is recommended, but can only be tested after 30 days of ingestion.

Rohypnol, also known as Flunitrazepam, is considered the original date rape drug. This drug is a benzodiazepine that can cause sedation and memory impairment. It’s notorious for its ability to make victims unaware of what’s happening to them. Rohypnol is now manufactured as an oblong olive-green tablet with a speckled blue core that turns light-colored drinks blue. When added to alcoholic drinks Rohypnol becomes deadly causing sever sedation, slow heart rate and suppression of respiration that could result in death. Detection in urine typically lasts 15 to 35 hours, while in hair or nail samples, it can be detected for a longer period, 30 days up to 6 months.

GHB, or Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid, is a Schedule-I controlled substance with no currently accepted medical use in the United States. GHB is a depressant and sold in a liquid form or as a white powder. GHB in a liquid form is clear, colorless and has a slightly salty taste and takes effect in 15 to 30 minutes. The drug lasts 3 to 6 hours and can induce euphoria, drowsiness, and confusion and high doses can cause unconsciousness and dangerously slowed breathing. GHB combined with Rohypnol and alcohol can very easily cause death. Detection of GHB in urine only lasts up to 3 to 10 hours, while in hair or nail samples, it can be detected within 30 days up to 6 months.

Ketamine, an anesthetic used in medical and veterinary settings, can cause sedation, hallucinations, and amnesia. It’s known as a “party drug” and has unfortunately been used in sexual assaults. Detection of ketamine in urine lasts 2 to 4 days, while in hair or nail samples, it can also be detected for up to 6 months.

Being informed about these substances and their effects can help individuals recognize potential dangers and take steps to protect themselves. If someone suspects they have been drugged, it’s important for them to seek help immediately and report the incident to authorities.
