Urine testing remains the most common and cost-effective method for workplace drug testing, offering reliable results with a detection window of 1-3 days for most substances. Urine testing is DOT-approved, widely accepted by employers, and provides excellent value for both pre-employment screening and ongoing testing programs.
Hair follicle testing provides a significantly longer detection window (up to 90 days) compared to urine testing (1-3 days) and is more difficult to adulterate or defeat. Hair testing is excellent for pre-employment screening and detecting patterns of drug use, while urine testing is better for detecting recent use and is required for DOT compliance programs.
Oral fluid testing typically has the shortest detection window (1-3 days), making it ideal for detecting recent drug use in post-accident scenarios, reasonable suspicion situations, and when immediate results are needed. Oral fluid testing is also difficult to adulterate and can be easily observed during collection.
Non-regulated companies can customize their drug testing panels based on specific workplace risks, industry standards, regional drug trends, and company policies. Common panels include 5-panel (marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, PCP), 10-panel (adds benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, propoxyphene, methaqualone), or expanded panels including synthetic drugs and prescription medications.
Nail testing can detect drug use for 3-6 months, providing the longest detection window available and serving as an excellent alternative when hair samples are unavailable due to baldness, recent hair cutting, or attempts to defeat hair testing. Nail samples are collected from fingernails or toenails and processed using specialized laboratory techniques.
