Fish Tales and DNA Testing Texas

by | Aug 27, 2013 | DNA Testing Texas, Genetic DNA Testing Texas | 0 comments

Normally when you think of DNA testing, the first things that come to mind are probably paternity testing, criminal investigations, etc. Chances are, you, like most people, probably don’t often equate DNA testing with non-human beings. Well, recently Texas DNA testing helped identify–of all things–the paternity of a fish! Yes, you read that correctly: a fish paternity test.

It all started in December of 2004 when Texas fisherman Jerry Campos caught a monstrous 14 pound largemouth bass at Lake Falcon in Laredo. Campos dubbed the bass “ShareLunker 370,” and then donated it to Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens as part of their ShareLunker program for spawning purposes. Recently, Allen Lane Kruse caught a big bass and set a water-body and catch-and-release record for Lake Naconiche. Texas DNA testing has determined that Kruse’s catch (weighing in at a hefty 12.5 pounds) is in fact the son of ShareLunker 370, the original fish that Jerry Campos had donated to the ShareLunker spawning program years earlier. And it looks like this son’s roots run deep: “The Lake Naconiche fish has even more connections to [the ShareLunker program], including its father in Lake Fork in 2000, its grandmother from Lake Fork caught in 1994 and a great grandmother caught in Gibbons Creek in 1988.” So, Texas DNA testing has helped discover the identity of a fish who turned out to be steeped in Texas fishing history.

DNA testing is not only useful in crime investigation (and occasionally fish geneology!) but it also sheds light on paternity cases, infidelity testing, twin zygosity, siblingship testing and more. When it comes to Texas DNA testing, you want and need unfailingly accurate results, especially if a court case is involved, or if child custody or child support are on the line.
