The entire drug and alcohol testing industry is fundamentally based on the harsh yet necessary philosophy that people will abuse substances illegally and lie about it. With this in mind, it is safe to say that to anyone who specifically works in this industry or to any company representative, the most dangerous drug user is, by definition, the one that can pass any drug test. When considering how beautifully complex the entire drug testing process can be, it is disheartening to know that any donor can completely undermine the dedication and hard work of a DER, collector, certified scientist, or even an MRO by using a single product that is readily available to buy in stores or from the internet. Synthetic urine is a liquid that is manufactured as a novelty product for the purposes of pranks and urine fetishes. It is also a product that an alarming number of drug users, many of whom are in safety sensitive positions to the public, use to substitute in the place of their actual urine for the purposes of passing a drug test. It is purchased from the internet, smoke shops, sex stores, and even sold at some convenience stores. Most synthetic urine brands come premixed with the creatinine values, specific gravity, and pH levels that will pass laboratory urine validity test(s) and some brands even state that animal urine or repellent is added for a more "realistic appeal." In the U.S. it is estimated that approximately 15 to 20 distributers and laboratories manufacture and sell synthetic urine on a mass production level. For the past 4 years, Drug and Alcohol Testing Compliance Services has been developing a synthetic urine recognition class specifically for collectors during the actual Collection. Within this time, the number of donors caught using synthetic urine has been a WAKEUP CALL for our industry and the companies that we help protect. The sad fact that our research suggest is that if the collector is not able to stop a donor from using synthetic urine to pass their drug test then the the laboratory, the Medical Review Officer, and the entire process of drug testing will become irrelevant. So let's consider what our research has shown. There is an entire industry whose sole reason for existence seems only to serve as an antithesis to our own. This “counter” industry includes companies that are making and selling products which include the very chemicals that are capable of passing laboratory validity tests. In conclusion, the best hope for providing safety for both the workforce and the public from drug use is through drug testing. If this is considered a never-ending war on drug use, then professional collectors should be considered the foot soldiers. However, unless more collectors show the initiative to take action as well as the understanding of why this advanced training is needed, then the war on drugs is already lost. DATCS has taken as much possible action on this epidemic as possible and now it is quite simply up to everyone else in our industry. If you as a collector desire to become one of the few and elite with the ability to stop donors from cheating on their safety sensitive drug test then call the training dept at DATCS. Become the best, through the best.
